about

when i was in kindergarten maybe 4 or 5yrs old i loved painting, like many kids do.

we used poster paint so we got to scoop out the powder and mix it with water, watching the small air bubbles pop on the surface of the pot holder.

i can even remember the smell.

i used to love the intensity of the colour as it flowed out from the brush and the texture of the paint across the paper. absorbed and lost at the same time.

one day i arrived in the class and was told to paint a picture of the national flag.  a picture of the flag had been placed on the blackboard to assist us. i can still remember the feeling of offense and disgust i felt. this was not painting. this was not the freedom or joy of painting. it was everything against that. in protest, i turned my back to the board and painted the flag, placed my paper on the teacher's desk when finished and went outside to play on the old fishing boat in the yard.
