In 2002 when I was fruit picking in Australia and people would lie on their beds texting back to Europe instead of joining into conversation in the room. I found it strange that someone wanted to be back home instead of here in the room. What I didn't realise is that texting got us connected and we all leapt to touch screens when smart phones arrived. We adapted to these new tools. and our way of communicating adapted. We wrote words phonetically, used emojis and then joined image and words together into memes. A meme is universal as it holds concepts or ideas, not beholden to the language you speak,  that are easily understood and transferred through sharing.  As it is used to cover multiple subjects, it grows in its complexity each time it is used.
