I loved the print colour in old picture books. When they printed one layer of colour at a time.  The paper seemed thick and slightly fluffed on the surface so that the colour seeped into the page and you could see this.  I think that may have made me fascinated with the beer mat drawings as the paper is also thick and slightly fluffed to allow beer to be absorbed but it helped with the blue ink. Certainly with these pigments on cloth. One thing about old picture books is how often the printed image hangs in the page, with big expanse of clear paper around it. I came quickly to enjoy that quality in my paintings, as though it is self contained on the 'page'(cloth) and the tension of the painting is held by the white expanse around.
