fold-a-way painting series

fold-a-way began on sark in the summer of 2017.  i began by painting on a2 paper but soon wanted to have more surface to begin to experiment with movement.  i white washed the paper and then masking taped the sheets together. i was now free to begin to explore a greater surface area and this introduced movement of my body to create the mark.  one of the challengers i took from my meeting of the art teachers in south africa was the idea of exploring brush marks. the variety of different ways they can be made and it made me think of the brush as a tool, with each size and tension of bristle creating its own variety of mark. I also realised that at the end of the day , i could fold the painting back down to a2 size again and place it in the protective holder and go home.  this was an incredible versatility when i got to fethiye in turkey.  i checked into a hostel and walked 30min out of town each day and found old abandoned buildings that i could use to paint in and get water from the mediterranean sea. at the end of the day i could fold it away and wander home. it was an idyllic rhythm to work to.
