I designed this interactive section as an accompaniment portal for the Island Hall Exhibition dont think im crazy but i know im not sane during August 2026. I wanted the phone to be like a social media portal. Keep your phone in portrait mode and you can then tap the icons, revealing different thoughts, video or small sketches I have done in the last year. I hope this adds to your experience. If you are at the exhibition please stand close to the paintings and use your peripheral vision. We stare at phones so much that you have to train your eye not to look at a point but to see the whole. Then stand further away and do the same, so you look through the painting which will make it easier to see the form.
Don't think I'm crazy but I know I'm not sane is how I feel it is to be alive in the year 2026. Artist are supposed to have an artist statement , a portfolio of their work and an understanding of their motivation or what they seek from their method. I didn't study art after school and so I haven't been formed by that thinking. As I have to work and find time outside of that to paint, I feel that these paintings are more like songs and my yearly exhibition, an album reflecting this period of my life. There are emotional reasons for these paintings and if you switch of the verbal side of your brain then you will begin to take in the energy of the painting but then there is also a verbal part of me in these paintings. They come out in the title and can be thought of as a starting point to the odds n ends I have been thinking about. My 1|0 exhibition in 2025, was where I first began to use my thumbprint to make a mark but in this album I have removed brushes and kitchen scoures, to just have just the thumbprint. I believe even more than last year that these paintings can be thought of as messages to our future selves; a marker at the start of the digital age that our ability to create wonderous beautiful objects has always laid outside of our technology. The thumb is also a universal implement, something we all share. Yet the pattern of our thumbprint is unique to each one of us.
These paintings are made in these times where much is breaking down and a rage at this collapse lashes us all. These days are revealing a truth about our relationship to power. Too often those who are vulnerable , who hold so little power, are being turned on. Often with such cruelty. I don't believe much good will come of any of this.
