50word Story
A brief moment
She leaned closer to the glass, transfixed as she followed the yellow stitching across the bridge of the leather shoes. She imagined wearing them on casual day, how excited she would feel.
“Come on Miriam,” said her mother, breaking the spell, “we have to go home”

gouache on paper

I painted these paintings during the Covid2020 lockdown in cape town on a 1m x 50cm board i found on a street corner. i placed it on an upturned laundry basket whilst sat on my bed to paint .
i called them colourScapes as a play on the idea of landscapes.
i hadn't painted much at all since i visit I made to Auschwitz in January2019. i had felt since then that i didn't want to paint and maybe I had finished with painting but then the realisation arrived during lockdown that the visit to Auschwitz had shocked me so deeply that I lost my desire to paint.
I only had the energy to paint small and willed myself to start again.
something has changed in me for sure since that day. a certain clarity has been given to me.
i hope you have found something that sits with you after you leave the exhibition and you may sometimes put a fragment of the site on a smart tv, or such thing, to have it around.
