I bought a second hand projector and got into watching a lot of films on climbing, which also involves a lot of falling. These sorts of images stop you, long conga lines of people heading to the summit of Everest. Up close , if you listen to the person's story, they all seem to be attempting to overcome or fulfill something in the challenge. But from afar, it took me a little while to understand why I was unsettled by it.
We have to conquer the natural world. It is our triumph and our tragedy. I understand those who dedicate themselves to climbing but now you can put down your money and attempt it. No guarantee you do as it is difficult but also that person can't just sit with the idea that it is ok to have something greater than them and yet still feel secure in themselves.
We have conquered much of the natural world to secure our survival but I wonder what we lost of ourselves in doing so.
And I understand as maybe I would also go if I had the chance
But then when I was lucky enough to fulfill a childhood dream to see the Himalayas, I was happy to look up at their grandness and to continue on through the valleys.
